How To Remove Scratches From A Monitor
When it comes to high / low-end CRT monitors and LCD panels, the methods used should be entirely different. Many CRTs and all LCDs have an ARAG coating (also known as anti reflective, anti glare, or filter mesh) which not only provides a protective surface, but also helps to reduce contrast and alters color corrections.
Avoid the following:
- The use of tissue paper or any hard materials
- Never use Household cleaning products with abrasive solutions on CRT/LCD's with an ARAG coating
- Avoid using unfiltered tap water, which can leave traces of mineral deposits.
- Products containing ammonia or acetone, such as Windex, will damage ARAG coatings.
Preparing the work area:
Before attempting any scratch repair methods, it is important to clean the display.
- If possible, use a microfiber cloth when cleaning the display
- Turn off the computer and monitor
- Use a damp corner of the cloth and gently wipe the screen
- Take a dry side of the cloth and gently wipe the screen
- Repeat if necessary!
Removing scratches from a CRT monitor
Removing scratches from a CRT monitor, where the screen is made of glass, would only be possible by a grind and polish method (similar to polishing scratches on shoes). Unfortunately, this method would ruin any high-end CRT with a filter mesh (ARAG coating) screen. Take caution when using this technique, as is is tricky, sometimes not working, and has been known to render the display unusable.
What about LCD?
Scratch removal on TFT/LCD screens isn't easy either. Using cleaning solvents will damage any screen with an ARAG coating. Many of these products, such as Isoproyl, will eat through the surface and irreversibly damage the screen.
Using pledge or other wood polishes on glass or LCD screens will leave a residue over the screen which is difficult to remove. The use of these products on screen with an ARAG coating will also damage the filter mesh.
If the scratch only penetrates the coating, it is possible (on many monitors) to peel off, and re-apply a new one. It is important to purchase a similar coating than the original.
Is it worth my efforts?
It all depends on the monitor! Some people will do as much as possible to try and remove scratches from a monitor. Especially for older CRTs that were once expensive, and have been with them for many years. If the scratch is small, unidentifying, and does not hinder your productivity, you may not want to try the methods described above. The best advice is to take extra care around your monitor, and clean it properly.
